When we're tired, have a busy schedules and things get bogged down, we can find comfort in this scripture. Hope you do!

Papa's General Store

Today, I was thinking about my Grandfather Phillips, "Papa", who had a general store in a little berg called Three Links, KY. The store is long gone, but there are many wonderful memories of Papa and Mama. Papa was a well liked kind Christian man. I remember early in the mornings Papa and Mama kneeling in prayer in their dining room.
They both died when I was in my early teens, but at times they come to mind. I still miss them. I wrote the following poem two or three years ago.

Papa’s General Store

I remember Papa’s General Store.
With A Big front porch across the building,
Wood framed siding,
Covered by an old metal roof.

Walking through the front door into its many wonders.
My childish eyes saw many things,
A unique interior of wood, walls, and shelves
That held many surprises.

Letters waiting in little boxed openings,
Waiting for their owners.
Bills to be paid.
Letters to be shared.

Many beautiful colored yard goods,
Lined up in a row,
To be made into shirts, dresses and blouses.
Carefully cut, and rolled in a brown paper and tied with a string.

Stick candies waiting in jars.
Little hands reaching up to take hold of their treasures.
Smiling faces,
Rewarding enjoyment.

Redwing shoes,
Can goods and staples,
Clothing,
A general supply of needed goods.

The old potbelly stove,
Surrounded by wooden chairs,
Tall tales,
Camaraderie beholding.

Wonderful times
Are forever in my memory,
Always tugging at my heart,
Never forgotten.

We are so fortunate to have the means of communication that wasn't possible years ago. We can keep in touch with family and friends with our blog journals, emails and phone calls. Fast & easy! Reach out and touch your family and friends today! :)

Some pictures of Paul & Amy's families to share:

You may be miles away but you're in our thoughts today!

Memorial Day with Family

Today was another fun day with the grandchildren. We wanted to make it special. We took Nick, Brett and Lauryn minature golfing. We chose a different golf course. This one was in Huber Heights. They thanked us for taking them again. We were able to finish before it rained. We had icecream at United Dairy Farmers after the game. That was a treat!

Memorial Day Holiday

"Lord, hold our troops in your loving hands. Protect them as they protect
us. Be with them and bless them today and in future days to come. Amen."

Day of Rest & Reflection

Memorial Sunday Memories
Today, my family will be celebrating Memorial Sunday at the cemetary up on a hill in KY. When I was a girl we always went. My parents are still faithful to go. There is a preaching service and decorating of the graves. Heartfelt memories of those who have passed on. Then we would have dinner on the grounds. Several years back we stopped having dinner on the grounds, but the service and decorating is still observed. Then, we would go to Berea, KY where dad's parents are buryied for a 21 gun salute. That is how we observed Memorial Sunday.

Catch Up Day

Today is a catch up day. I had to get my oil changed. Cleaned on the garage. Get ready for the holiday weekend. I picked up the buns and chips so we could grill out. Nick and Brett are spending the weekend with us. We are going out to eat tonight and then go minature golfing. That's always fun!.

Called and checked on the sick. Ryan and Isaiah are mending. Thank you for praying for my two sick grandchildren. I talked to Paul this morning. Ryan is back to school & even played ball at the end of the week. Thursday, I went with Beth to take Isaiah back to the doctor. He gave him more medicine. He is a lot better & not running high fevers. I'm glad they are doing better.

Minature Golf Update:
Grandpa Merrill won the golf game. We had lots of fun. We are all a little rusty so... we need to play again. :)

I talked to Beth & Isaiah has the hives now. Probably a reaction to the medicine for his ear ache. She is so tired & Isaiah is fussy. They need our prayers again!

Talked to Wayne tonight. They are on their way home from Florida. They had a nice time but will be glad to be home. It will be nice to see them again & have them safely home.

Happy Birthday Monte!

Todays blog is dedicated to Monte for his birthday.
May you have many more happy birthdays!

Hot & Dry

The tables sure turned fast. It stayed cold for so long and then switched to hot. Not much spring weather. The good thing is that we do not have to mow much. The hot weather is nice, but I still like my spring and fall with mild weather.

Everyone seems to be leaving town. Gas is extremely high so travel will be expensive this year. Dad and mom left for KY this morning, Duane & David are leaving for WV tomorrow morning and Steve & Buffy are leaving for ILL Saturday.

Merrill got in today from his travels. We will stick around home this holiday weekend. I'm sure we'll find something to do.

Frogs & Toads

Not a lot going on right now. Just the regular daily work schedule. The nice thing is that the weather is hot and we can do more outside in the early morning and evening. I've still not planted more garden since we haven't had rain. I don't want to add a bigger wateriing schedule.

I've been turning off the air at night. Merrill wanted to open the windows and let in the night air. The frogs were beeping constantly, but every now and then the big bull frogs would let out their bellybeep which is really loud. Finally, I had to close the windows because the frogs were so loud we could not sleep. :)

I still like to hear the frogs.

Day On The Run

I thought this little duck that I got in an email was so cute that I had to just share it with you. Enjoy!

A Day On the Run

It started out when I went to Beth's at about 7:30 a.m. to help her. Little Isaiah has a virus and is very sick. Beth is tired and I wanted to help her get some rest.
This is the first time Isaiah has been sick. He is just miserable. I've been praying that he'll soon be over it.

Ryan has been very sick in NC with strep throat. He has had a bad case this time. I've been praying Ryan will soon be over this and back to normal. Please pray for both my sick grandsons.

I had lots of errands to do today, so it was another day in the van. Then I had to purchase the $3.49 gas. That's dreadful! Run, run, run!

Dave and Eli fished again today. I told Duane they remind me of Huck & Tom. Hopefully, they aren't as onery. They just have a blast. I like to watch them because they take it so serious.

I mowed around the area a mother goose is sitting on her eggs. I had one eye on the goose and one eye on my mower. Needless to say, I kept my distance and she let me know how far to go. When you see the beak prepared to take a bite - you know where to quit. lol Just ask my son, Paul. When he was a little guy, he decided to lean over and look at a nest of goose eggs. The old mother goose took a big bite out of his rear! Those birds sure can put a hurtin' on ya!!!

Reflections of Friday night & Saturday

Friday night, Steve and Buffy's three children spent the night with us. Steve and Buffy were up at camp for a "Marriage Retreat".

We had lots of fun! Of course, hot chocolate and popcorn were on the menu. The children were great.
Saturday, Breanna and I went to Greenville to do our grocery shopping. Merrill took the boys to mow grass and work with him. Later in the day after Steve came, the boys went with Uncle Mike and Aunt Beth to a park in Troy. They had great fun!

Here are a few of the pictures Beth sent me of Saturday at the Park & with Duane & David.

Happy 12th Anniversary Steve & Buffy

May 6, 1995
Happy Anniversary to Steve & Buffy. May you have many more happy years together!

This is belated because our records were wrong.

Memories

This morning my thoughts are of my "Kentucky Roots." I was five when we moved to Ohio. We came North because Dad wanted to better his job situation. He worked at GM until he retired. Our old house in KY is torn down now. I do remember some of the things that happened there. I remember the horse caught in a fence and laying on its side. I remember the butchering of a big white hog. I remember a picture, which mom and dad still have, hanging on the wall.

Today, I am a little sad. Another cousin, a little distant maybe second or third, passed away. He was three months older than I am. His name was Bently Hayes and my Great Grandmother Martha raised him. I remember my brother and I playing with him as children. We always had loads of fun playing with our KY relatives. Granny Marthy had a little house at the base of a hill and to get to the house you had to walk across a log which had been sawed flat on top. Of course, this is Appalachia, if you find that hard to imagine. We would play in the creek in front of her house. Of course many years have passed and I have not seen him probably since my teen or early twenties. There are lots fond memories of our youth.

A Refreshing Rain

Don't you just love a refreshing rain? I love rain. I listened to the rain on the roof last night and fell asleep. I always feel like God has his arms around me. I find it comforting. I do not like lightening though - now that scares me.

This morning I opened the windows and let the fresh air in. Curtains blowing and the cool of the outside coming in is neat. Well, I guess you can see it doesn't take a lot to amuse me.

Beth told me that the grandchildren were feeding my animals yesterday. Isaiah likes to feed my animals and Beth does it fairly regular. Lauryn and Brooklyn were over at Aunt Beth's yesterday and they were feeding my animals and playing with them. Thanks!

If you are wondering what I am talking about. On the left side of my blog are farm animals. You can touch the animals and they move. You can click more, food and sometimes a toy will pop up. Click what you want to use and either feed or play with my farm animal. If you run the mouse arrow up the horses neck he will "nee" for you. Have fun!!!

I've always liked Panda Bears. I like to play with the Panda. He rolls over and eats the bamboo. He is so cute. He's my favorite pet. But, I enjoy the farm animals also.
I'm in my second childhood or maybe I never left the first. lol

Flowers from Paul

Children Are Such A Blessing

This is a photo of the Mother’s Day flowers from Paul. The deliveryman just laughed when I said, “For Me!” “Who would be sending me flowers?” He must have one pleasant job delivering to unsuspecting recipients.

I do not know what I did to deserve such wonderful children. Thanks for the cards & gifts. I thank God for my beautiful kind children and grandchildren. They are all such a blessing!

Why People Read & Write Blogs

I think people read and write bogs because they are looking for good news. Of course, there are the bad news bloggers, but blog readers aren't stuck with predominatly bad news like newspapers, magazines, internet and media news. I can't everyday, but frequently, I will read many blogs to see what's going on in people's lives. I keep a folder in my favorites of interesting blogs, family & friends blogs so that I can find then if I wait too long. (At my age - memory sometimes slips. Yea, really! lol ) Anyway, it is fun to see all the blogs, all the happy events, the happy faces. Blogging is so much better than the daily or weekly news! So, if you read this consider blogging and share your good news. Share your happy times (and sometimes sad), your happenings and thoughts with others.

Quick note: I am going to visit my parents today. Yesterday, I told mom that I wrote her a mother's day message. (Yes, I did buy her a card & gift earlier.) I told her to go and click on her desktop and the shortcut would take her to my blog. Well, she's having computer memory lapse & can't figure it out. I'm getting wordy - sorry! Anyway, she wants to blog. Says, she has some scriptues she wants to write about. I told my daughter, Amy, that the apple didn't fall far from the tree. I think I'm like my mom! lol

Monday Musings

I always start out Monday's dragging. I helped Merrill get off around 6:00 a.m. He will be going to Pennsylvania tonight. I hope I can go with him after he gets back tomorrow. Today is going to be a busy day so traveling would be a relief especially after all the ups and downs of last week.

Last week I was reading Proverbs 31. I intended to listen to this tape I have by John E.MacArthur, Jr. of "Grace to You" before today on Proverbs 31: 10-31, but didn't get to it. It is called "An Excellent Wife." I like to listen to it every once in awhile. It is part of his "God's Design For A Successful Woman" set. Encouraging to say the least!

Proverbs 31 always makes me feel tired. I know this woman probably had servants, but she also must have had the energy of a work horse. She is really a woman to look up to. Quite the example!

Explanation Time:
When I comment on a scripture or subject, I will not be using anyone I know that will be reading my blog, whether it be family, friends or acquaintences. My comments usually are what I gather from what I have been reading, listening to and sometimes experiencing with those I work or come in business contact with. Please do not take offence, these are the way I feel. I would not feel right to criticize, preach or make fun of what people do on a blog because that's not fair. If you have aught against someone you should go to them not go public. I do tend to get serious and my little helpers guide me into something lighter, hence, the "Young People Now a Days" story last week. What else could I do? lol :)
God Bless You & Have a Good Day!

Happy Mother's Day

""Happy Mother's Day" to my wonderful Mom. I thank you for so many things. You taught me how to love and give. You have the God given gift of compassion even for the undeserving. I will always remember how you and dad have given money, clothes and necessities to those in need. How you've shown concern for the hurting even though you did not know them personally. Your love of God and family. I love you very much Mom and I thank God for you. If I had it to do all over again, I would want you to be my Mom. Happy Mother's Day!"

"Happy Mother's Day to my daughters and daughter's in laws. I'm thankful for good Godly women for my sons and Godly daughters. You all are great mothers and I appreciate you all! I love you!" Mom

Touching Poem

To Those I Love and
Those Who Love Me

When I am gone, release me, let me go.
I have so many things to see and do.
You mustn’t tie yourself to me with tears,
Be happy that we had so many years.

I gave you my love, you can only guess
How much you gave to me in happiness.
I thank you for the love you have shown
But now it’s time I travel on alone.
So grieve awhile for me, if grieve you must
Then let your grief be comforted by trust.

It’s only for a little while that we must part,
So bless the memories within your heart.
I won’t be far away, for life goes on.
So if you need me, call and I will come.
Though you can’t see or touch me, I’ll be near.
And if you listen with your heart you’ll hear
All of my love around you soft and dear.

And then, when you must come this way alone
I’ll greet you with a smile and "Welcome Home."

This was a poem that was read at my cousin, David Phillips, memorial service today. I have heard it before and liked it. I thought I would share it with my blog readers.

Rejoice in the Lord

"I will rejoice in the Lord, I will joy in the God of my salvation." Hab. 3:18

The Lord is the joy of our salvation and this is one great reason to rejoice. I thank the Lord that he saves and keeps us in these trying times. The news is filled with troubling times and with worrysome issues, but we have a God who has everything under control. We just need to be true to Him and live according to His word. We can be a witness to those around us. Trust God!

It is so nice to be around family. I love to watch the grandchildren play and learn to do new things. Our oldest grandson, Kyle is 16 and our youngest which is a boy also is 4 months. There are 13 grandchildren from the oldest to the youngest.
Below are a few of this weeks pictures that I thought you might enjoy.

Godliness With Contentment

"Godliness with contentment is great gain."
We look at the world around us and we see very unsatisfied people. It really doesn't matter whether the person is poor, middle class or rich. People that have the mind set to always seek money and things are very miserable. The real secret of happiness is not the getting of more, but the wanting of less. Sure it would be nice to have a new four wheeler, new boat, new camper, new house or whatever, but is it the best thing to seek. Learning to be happy and content with what we have is a gift. I do not say deprive yourself unless the Lord leads you that way. I'm saying don't try to keep up with the Jones's so to speak. Also, I'm not saying that it is wrong to have those things. I am saying that to be obcessed with getting more and more is wrong especially if the family suffers because the mother has to go out and work to keep up that lifestyle.

Today, David and his friend Eli went fishing. They had lots of fun and caught a couple of fairly nice bass. They were not extremely large, but I did manage to convince Duane to take them home and show the boys how to clean a prepare fish.

The mower wouldn't start so Steve came over and jumped it for me. I almost got the rest of the yard mowed, but it started getting dark and looking like rain. I decided to put the mower away and finish tomorrow. One thing I really enjoy is mowing, but I am not real wild about Merrill's mower. It is one of those Dixons that is zero radius. It is just hard for me because the steering bars seem to be too far away. I guess I am just too short. My mower is down and out of commission right now. We have a large yard so it takes a day or two sometimes to get it done because of the day's heat. But, I guess everyone has their mowing stories. I'm just thankful that we have nice green grass to mow and nice warm weather to do it in.

Working Outdoors

Today is a big outdoors workday. Beth and Isaiah came out. Beth did a lot of mowing for me. We were going to work in the garden but decided to wait until next week. We really need rain. The garden seeds are just laying there. Zone 5 frost date is around May 17th anyway so it will not hurt to wait. I took some pictures of Isaiah. He is so cute on the mower.

Young People Now A Days

Young People Now A Days
By Connie Lavy

With a twinkle in her eyes Emily excitedly pulled out of the drive and started on her journey. “I’ve never been late for lunch and I won’t start today!” she said as she drove to see her adult children in a neighboring town. This is our annual family gathering to remember papa. I know that I can make it,” Emily said as she pushed the accelerator to the floor.

Reaching over to pick up a falling paper and swerving. She looks up and squeals, “What in the world is that man doing? I have never seen a man jump purposefully in a mud puddle before. What some people won’t do for a little attention. I just don’t know about young people now a days. He’s crazy!”

Emily is thinking, “It must be foggy outside. It’s just a little blurry, maybe I’ll just clean my glasses.” Reaching up she pulls off her glasses, pulls the hankie out of her blouse top, and rubs off the lens’. “Trying to steer and clean my glasses isn’t as easy as it was 50 years ago,” she thought. “Why is that car running off the side of the road? I just don’t know about these young drivers now a days!”

Smiling Emily reminisces about former days. “ Papa was a big man. Kindly loved by everyone including his two children, John and Sarah. We had so much fun swimming, camping, and sledding. I miss papa.” She said to herself.

Picking off a mailbox after coming up out of the ditch, Emily says loudly, “Why in the world would anyone put a mail box right on the road? You’d think they would be more considerate that that! Someone’s going to have fun picking up all his letters in that mud. Just serves them right. These young folks now a days!”

Today reminds me of the day Papa forgot his umbrella and boots. He was walking home from the neighbors when it started a downpour. No place to get in to keep dry. He got home and went to the outbuilding and took off his outer clothes to keep my floors from getting wet. He runs in the front door with nothing but his long underwear on and meets the new minister and his wife as they are leaving. Everyone was shocked! Papa’s face was so red!

“Well, why in the world, would a car just sit there and not move. Guess I’d just better go around them. Hey why are you honking at me, you nit wit, you almost hit me in the side. Boy, these young people now a days, they just don’t know how to drive.”

“I remember when papa decided to surprise the children and take them on a holiday trip.” thought Emily. “We hid our luggage under some blankets in the back of the wagon. Picked the kids up playing down the road and started off. They fell asleep on some straw and a cover in the back of the wagon. When they woke up it was almost night.” Both said in unison, “Where are we?” Smiling, Emily thought, “Such fun, the good old days.”

“Wonder what all those people are looking at? I don’t see anything; oh wait a minute that looks like laundry on the back of my car. Sure is a funny way for people to dry their clothes. I sure don’t know what to think of young people now a days.

“Say, look at the pretty lights!” Emily says as she pulls to a stop. She rolls down her window and says, “Hello young man do you need help?”

“Lady, I need to see your drivers license”, frowned the officer. “Yes sir,” replied Emily pushing her cockeyed glasses higher on her nose and reaching over for her purse. Pulling out her knitting needles, scissors, magnifying glass, safety pins, milk of magnesia, vitamins and an apple, she finally finds her license.

“Lady is this some kind of joke?’ the officer scowls, “this is a hand made license.” Looking sheepishly with her glasses cocked on her face again she grins,”Yes, sir, I failed my eye exam 20 yrs. Ago and I had to make my own license because they would not give me one. I just couldn’t break the law. You know I am 95 years old. I should not even have to have a drivers liscense with the driving experience that I have.”

Sitting in the seat of the cruiser, Emily’s thinking, “How considerate of this young officer to take me to town. Young people sure are nice these days.”

One Full Day

Isaiah Michael Dickinson, born May 5, 2006
What a wonderful blessing this little boy is. He is just about always smiling!
"Happy Birthday Isaiah!"

Isaiah was fun to watch. First of all he wasn't sure about tearing the paper off his gifts. This should be a "no, no!" Then he really got into his cake. Now that was serious business. He ate the whole big piece! He did enjoy his cake!!!

Saturday, One Full Day!
In the morning I had the Master Gardener Workshop. We went to Uncle Cyrl Welbaum's Estate Aucion in the afternoon. Last evening, we went to Beth & Mike's to celebrate Isaiah's 1st Birthday. By the time I got home, I was ready to drop.

Our Master Gardener Workshop where I spoke on "Container Gardening." We made up a couple nice container plants. I did one small planter and an herbal planter. They should look really nice in a couple of weeks. The herbal container really smells awsome! Of course, you need to like herbs to get enthused about the "smells."

Check back in a couple weeks to see how these containers look after they've grown. I will put up a couple photos.

Cyrl Welbaum's Estate Auction
Estate auctions are so final. It is amazing that what you've saved for, purchased and used down through the years is sold in a days time. Time & things are so temporary. But, it does put things in perspective. It was nice to be with the family during this time. I hope their auction was successful. Uncle Cyrl and Aunt Cuba loved their family and they had a lot of fun times. It's hard knowing things will never be the same.

Happenings

Yesterday...
National Day of Prayer
Greenville,OH

It was so nice to participate in the "National Day of Prayer" in Greenville, OH.
It was held on the square in front of the Government Building. There was about 45 minutes of prayer & singing. There was not really a lot of speaking. I was touched most when a Church of God Pastor was praying and asked for God to intervene so that children could pray in school again. A group of young people gave a hearty amen to that.

Today, I went with Merrill to pick up his load. He will be leaving for Wisconsin early Monday morning. I had the time to work a short trip in.

National Day of Prayer

“If my people, who are called by my name will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and will heal their land.” II Chronicles 7:14

The first Day of Prayer was declared by the Continental Congress in 1775.
"I therefore beg leave to move That henceforth prayers, imploring the assistance of Heaven and its blessing on The first Day of Prayer was declared by the Continental Congress in 1775. I therefore beg leave to move That henceforth prayers, imploring the assistance of Heaven and its blessing on our deliberations, be held in this assembly every morning before we proceed to business; and that one or more clergy of this city be requested to officiate in that service."
Benjamin Franklin

National Day of Prayer

I urge you to join the "National Day of Prayer." America is a great country and we still have the freedom to worship, pray, work and live like we want to. Yes, we are losing our freedoms as Christians, but a lot of that we've brought on ourselves. Not everyone feels like getting out and joining many groups in prayer, but you can pray at home and join in the National effort for those who see the great need for America to change it's course. Of course, I see the need to put feet to your prayers and vote or do whatever you can to make America a decent and safe place to live. But, prayer does changes things! Prayer is our greatest effort!

America has all the wrong idol's right now. Hollywood, sports figures, and people who have dreadful life styles. The Ten Commandments are tread upon and Christians are made fun of, and put down at increasingly regular events and times. Our news media seem to thrive on so called Christian downfalls. They love to note the people who really have hidden sins. We call them wolves in sheep's clothing. We are deluged with people who proclaim to preach the gospel, but support sinning lifestyles. If we don't do something now, we may very soon not have a chance. It is snowballing. We've got to support the right things, demand changes and work to see those changes, but the biggest, most important element of the whole equation is "Prayer!"

I'm preaching, but for our children, grandchildren, friends, relatives and our country in general. For a free America with Godly values, the land that we love! Hopefully, that is the goal for anyone who reads this.

God Bless You Today and please "Pray for America" today!

Have Confidence

"Have confidence in God's mercy, for when you think He is a long way from you, He is often quite near." Thomas A Kempis

Isn't it true that sometimes when we feel blue and all alone, God is really right there with us holding us in his hand. Or, sometimes I imagine His arm around my shoulder sheilding me from the blast.

Today:

I got planted what I needed done. Next week I'll probably put in a large amount because it will be closer to end of the frost date. But, still lots of grass to mow & lots and lots of weeds. It looks like I have a dandeline plantation. I do not like to use chemicals on the grass at this time of year because of the grandchildren. I will put the chemical on in late fall.

This is a picture of the little kitten that one of our cats brought up. My little granddaughters just love cats, so they should like this little guy. Hope he makes it.
Last year the neighbors dog killed my kittens. The kitten is black and white, long haired with blue eyes. I saw his daddy back in the late winter and ordered him as a father of this years kittens. lol I think Mittens is the mother. She is my favorite cat that Lauryn gave me a few years ago. She is long haired, gray with some white markings. She will let you turn her upside down and rub her tummy and play with her paws. This kitten is like that,so, I wonder...

Isn't this a sweet kitten?
