On The Inside Looking Out

Well, I'm on the inside looking out and it is beautiful! Since it snowed again, let's enjoy the snow while we can.

This is a picture of our actual Advent centerpiece in our home. For several years I have used the Advent calendar, but this year, I added the advent centerpiece. It is quite an experience. We light it for our supper hour. We talk about "hope" which is the first candle that we light the fourth Sunday before Advent. This is a tradition that some Christians follow and it makes the Christmas season more special.

We light the candle for the supper hour each evening and it burns until supper is over. We will light two candles this coming Sunday and so on... The last candle is the white candle which represents Christ's birth which we will light on Christmas Eve or Christmas Day. Some people do not use the center candle, but will replace the four, 3 purple & 1 pink, with four white candles, but I prefer the one white candle in our observance. The idea is to celebrate the reason for the season and make Christmas a more spiritual time.

Also, I have been using the Back To The Bible, Advent scriptures. This is a good guide that is already made out with the appropriate scripture reading for the days of Advent.

When you children were home, I did not know anything about celebrating Advent. I started seeing Advent materials and started researching it and really liked what I saw. Most people who celebrated Advent were from different religous persuasions than we are, so I guess our families didn't observe it. Today, more and more Christians are observing Advent, probably, to make Christmas have a more spiritual meaning. Certainly, the media and stores have done everything they can to ruin the true meaning of Christmas, but we Christians can turn lemons into lemonade.

I know you remember seeing my Advent calendar which I bought in Amish country at a store in Sugarcreek several years ago. That's when I started searching about Advent.

I hope this explains why we didn't celebrate it while you were home and why we do today. I am even educating your dad on Advent. It is a special time for us and it makes us closer because we do it at supper, hold hands & pray, so it has taken on great meaning for us.
